How to Password Protect Folder in Windows PC

Are you worried of your personal data stored in your PC. Now its time to free from all those problems. There are a lot of methods that you can use to password protected folder. most of which requires use of some third-party software.  Now no need of buying expensive software.Here is a simply way to protect your folder from others without using any software.

The following steps will help you in locking your folder.

Step-1: Creating a Folder in specified drive

Initially you have to create a folder(or choose a folder) which you wanted to lock in any of the Drive.

In the above image i created a folder by name “test’

Step-2: Open the COMMAND PROMPT

Now open the Run dialog and press “CMD” without quotes.

Then a window will pop-up like the below image.

Step-3: Choose the Drive in CMD

In this step you have to select the Drive , for doing it use the commands given below(Without quotes):

  • Press ” E: ” to select the E: drive,
  • Press ” D: ” to select the D: drive,.. etc..

Step-4: Enter the Code in CMD

In this step, you should enter below code in the command prompt:

” cacls foldername /p everyone:n “(without quotes)

[in the code replace the foldername with your specified folder name ]
then press Enter. It will ask a question like this:

” Are you sure (Y/N)? “

now press ” Y “.

Thats it… you have locked your folder now.
Now if you try to open the locked folder , it shows a pop-up windows like this…

To Unlock the folder:-

you should follow the previous three steps(Step-1,Step-2,Step-3).
Then you should enter the below code in the command prompt:

” cacls foldername /p everyone:f ” (without quotes)

[in the code replace the foldername with your specified folder name ] 

then press Enter. It will ask the same question below:

“Are you sure (Y/N)? “

now press “Y”.

Thats it… you have unlocked your folder now.
